Sheriff Services
The County of Contra Costa embodies an area approximately 750 square miles and a population of over one million. The Sheriff’s Patrol Division provides uniformed law enforcement services to approximately 517,454 residents who either live in part of Contra Costa’s 521 square miles of unincorporated land, a contract city, or a special district such as the Town of Discovery Bay.
The Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office maintains a network of Station Houses, each of which is commanded by a Lieutenant, and enables efficient provision of law enforcement services to the 163,000 residents of the unincorporated areas of the County. Deputies assigned to the unincorporated Patrol Services Division respond to over 600,000 citizen-generated calls and Deputy-initiated events per year, generating over 38,000 written reports.
Discovery Bay Sheriff's Annex
In September 2009, the Sheriff’s Office unveiled its new annex located on Discovery Bay Boulevard in Discovery Bay, and introduced the community to their two new resident deputies as well as a crime specialist. In addition, the town also christened a new patrol car that is assigned to patrol Discovery Bay.
The resident deputies, crime prevention specialist and additional patrol car were paid for with P6 zone funds—more than $500,000 per year earmarked for enhanced police services and collected from residents living in the specialized P6 tax areas in Discovery Bay West. Beginning in 2010, a new P6 Committee began meeting to ensure that these funds are spent appropriately, and to also provide input into future needs.

Marine Patrol
The Office of the Sheriff also provides law enforcement services for the Delta waterways—the second largest network of inland waterways on the West Coast.
The Marine Unit patrols over 200 miles of linear coastline, from Richmond to Discovery Bay. Deputies assigned to Marine Patrol serve to keep the waterways safe through education and enforcement and conduct search and rescue of missing or disabled boats. The Marine Patrol is actively involved in improving the water quality of the Delta by way of abandoned vessel abatement and removal.
Air Support Unit
The Air Support Unit of the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office has two helicopters that provide law enforcement reconnaissance, rescue and support to all public safety agencies within the County. The Sheriff’s Office uses Starr One, a Bell 407 Jetcopter, and Starr Two, a Bell 206B-3, for aerial patrol of Contra Costa County as well as providing mutual aid support to the surrounding counties and East Bay Regional Park District.
